Gibraltar apes

By | October 26th, 2013|Winter 2013|

We had a good aftermoon exploring the Rock of Gibraltar. The town and marinas have not got much going for them, but the Rock itself was fun. We took a cable car to the top and were warned to keep our bags concealed. There was a pack of about 20 [...]

Liferaft test

By | October 15th, 2013|Cruises, OceanFree updates, Winter 2013|

We had the liferaft serviced today in Palma Majorca. And because it was a few years since it was last out of its shell, I thought it would be good to see it exploded. The liferaft technicians were very thorough and checked it visually first. They unpaacked it, checked the cylinder and valves and then pulled the inflation cord. The raft filled up well and was in as-new condition no need for concern.

Sailing past Stromboli

By | October 3rd, 2013|Cruises, Video, Winter 2013|

We left Italy this morning after a quick night in a commercial port in the Straights of Messina. Strange night - we had two Italian coastguards turn up in their car alongside our berth in the port at about 9.00pm They did not get out of the car - but had me come up to the car window and asked all kinds of questions. They then said they would be back at 1.00am to check our paperwork! I persuaded them to take the details with them and they went through all our papers and transcribed everything onto a scrap of paper. They struggled with the concept that we had sailed there from Corfu!

New forestay

By | September 28th, 2013|OceanFree updates|

The forestay is off and the furling gear is being removed here to enable the forestay cable to be replaced. This uses special low stretch Dyform stainless steel cable to resist the high loads in the rig. After 7 years use, it was good to strip this doen and replace [...]

Replacing the rigging

By | September 27th, 2013|OceanFree updates, Winter 2013|

Look no hands! And not much holding up the mast either We bought a replacement set of standing rigging from Spencers Rigging in Cowes (dont use them, they were appalling to deal with) and sent it down by truck to Corfu. We moved the boat next to.the Quay in Corfu [...]
